Portrait of Betsy Chrischilles of the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Iowa College of Public Health

Dear friends,

The Department of Epidemiology has grown and evolved dramatically during its 50 years of existence. During that time so many faculty, staff and students have helped to shape the student experiences, research centers, cohorts and registries. We have more than one hundred students in the department and enrollment has increased by one-third in the last two years. Our goals are broad - investigating the causes and consequences of infectious diseases, chronic diseases and injuries and the effectiveness of interventions in populations. We are thrilled to introduce three new faculty members who are keeping our research and methods relevant and contemporary.

As we grow and evolve, we celebrate our history this year with several major anniversaries of our centers and registries.

Take care and best wishes,

Injury researchers use technology to study bicycle safety for kids and adults

The start of the school year and the return of in-person learning in many locations means people are on the move, and that includes more students riding bicycles to classes. Cara Hamann, assistant professor of epidemiology, uses technology – such as GPS-enabled helmet cameras – to study dangers riders are exposed to and risky behaviors that make them and others on roads and sidewalks less safe.
