Department of Epidemiology Students and Faculty

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

This year, the College of Public Health marks its 25th anniversary.

In this newsletter, you'll see the Department of Epidemiology pursuing the College’s vision "to serve Iowa and the Midwest as one of the nation’s premier state-assisted schools of public health and lead the global community in rural public health education and training, research, and practice." You’ll note new funding to improve the care for older Iowans, research to investigate the effects of pro-family workplace benefits on working women's health, celebrating continued partnerships building injury research and education capacity across the world, and contributing to public health through kindness and civil engagement.

And this fall, we welcome eight new alumni—four MPH and four PhD graduates. They are well-prepared to meet today’s challenges with resilience and leadership. Their education equips them to adapt and excel in addressing today’s pressing public health concerns. They join over 650 graduates we have trained since our founding in 1976 as the Division of Epidemiology in the former Department of Preventive Medicine:

  • 131 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees
  • 359 Master of Science (MS) degrees in Epidemiology and Clinical Investigation (including some awarded en route to the PhD), and
  • 209 Master of Public Health (MPH) degrees in Epidemiology.

Here’s to the next 25 years of success and impact!
